Springfield Creamery Benefit at Veneta

I guess they filmed the entire show as part of the benefit for the Creamery and a good amount is here. More of a documentary format, but its got a good amount of complete tunes; the China>Rider is lethal. Sound quality is outstanding.

I've got it streaming on the wide screen as we speak. The house is a rockin'.

EDIT:

Parental Warning: There is a good amount of gratuitous nudity as many of the spinners are clothing optional. That plus one dude standing on a pole just behind the stage during Jack Straw who apparently thought it would be a good idea to wave his package to the entire crowd.
You've been warned.....

Update: Just in time for a mind-blowing Darkstar, someone must have gotten to the Pole Dude and threw some shorts on him. No junk during jams, I always say.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. They cut me off the long uploads as FunkensteinJr so I moved to a new channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/voodoonola

As of now I have 60 full shows, some are just single sets, uploaded.

Well, as to the "floored" thing, I will freely admit that there are many things I'm sure I have yet to learn about this band. I'm thinking this is primarily due to the long hiatus I took from active listening and participation in the community. My "re-birth" a few years ago has left me playing catch up with so many wonderful things. In addition, I have never been a detail oriented kind of guy and so the existence of certain films, or recordings, or interviews or the such has often gone unrecognized by this humble poster. I am a much more visceral kind of listener, as one can glean from my posts and reviews. I certainly tip my cap to those who relish in the details of the band and the structure of the music, it is a truly admirable quality that has resulted in some great information that I truly appreciate. These folks are more aware of the specifics and history of this band than I will ever be.

My love for this music seems to be constantly shifting and changing course as I hear something different, or get a fresh view of an old favorite after reading something here. Finding artifacts like this makes me feel like a new listener all over again and I'm sure there are many other things out there that I have yet to discover. This may be why I keep coming back here, other than to mock and be mocked. Almost daily I am pointed in some new direction by something I read here and this is a wonderful thing that I appreciate more than I can say. I think my posting of this video, while I was fairly sure many of you had seen it before, was more aimed at folks like myself who are eagerly looking for something they haven't seen before and I wanted to be sure that as many people as possible had the chance to share the feeling I had as this played on my TV yesterday.

And I still fee that "No junk during jams" certainly sums it all up...well, not really, but I just like saying it.

Hey there -- no need to explain. There's always space here to remind people about the classics. I was just a little surprised, is all. That's probably the best single GD video there is!

Only wish I had known about it earlier, having a video record of that China>Rider and Darkstar is incredible. I will certainly return to it again and again.

Yeah, but it would have been nice if the Overalls Dude from the Dead Movie could have given some clothing advice to the Pole Dude.

EDIT: What if the Pole Dude and the Overalls Dude are the same Dude? What if the Pole Dude was approached by some band dude after the Veneta show and told "Hey, dude, you better put on some clothes for the next video shoot..."

The dude abides...(only now he abides in overalls, not buck-naked on a pole)

As long as it doesnt involve bad poem guy or royalty guy from the concession stand I am good!

Who could forget this fine poem...

If the dead were to die
I'd have reason to cry,
'cus the band i used to see
would be a cold memory;
But if the dead were to live,
free concerts they'd give;
Jerry G. on guitar
Would bring ... near and far;
If the dead were deceased
there would be no street peace,
we'd take all the power,
skin the cat and take a shower;
But if the dead live long
we'll be singing there songs,
and we'll all be so glad
momma' hated diesel so bad."

Thank you Skobud,I didn't think it was possible,but it is far worse in print than his lame recitation in the movie."We'd take all the power,skin the cat ,and take a shower" sends the mind reeling.I laughed so hard I teared up.

I've seen snippets of this before, but not the whole thing ... so while I knew OF it, it's really something to see, and put the music into this context. Makes the Dark Star even more powerful, blasting and shimmering out over the sun-and-lysergic drenched crowd.

Reminds me that there's another great batch of videos - a great majority of the show from the Cameron show on 4/12/78 available on youtube. We've all seen this before, but this is a truly happy Jerry show - he's rockin' and grinning with huge energy.

US Blues:

and now I found the entire show posted as one long clip:

what a fun show.

Funny. I watched SSDD just last (one more saturday) night
while tripping my titties off. Historical stuff indeed. You always have the best taste SDH. (Im gonna leave that one open for any fifth grade remarks)

It always makes me laugh to see this picture:
It seems like Jerry is just thinking..." Wait, don't tell
me. There a naked guy on a pole dancing right behind me,
isn't there??"

I've read a couple of different takes over the years on why this bad boy never made official release; unfortunately I can't recall the details but it certainly didn't have anything to do with the quality of the performance. Although I have made good-natured fun of John Dwork's somewhat hysterical review of the Veneta show in the Taping Compendium Vol.1 (it would make my top 10 for '72, but not my top 5), it's still a *tremendous* show. There are enough bootlegged copies of the film floating around that you shouldn't have too much trouble locating one.

Well, the Dead own the music, but the filmmakers own the film. (The Dead themselves rejected any 'official' release at the time.) So they'd have to work out some financial agreement, if they haven't already; and of course whenever it is done, I'm sure they'd put it out as a full set with CDs, DVD-bonus interviews, etc.
Why such a release didn't happen years ago is beyond me, so I assume money is the sticking-point for someone...

From a David Lemieux interview in 2009:

JPG: Any news on a release of Veneta ’72?

DL: I’m sure that people are working on it. I always say that because I’ve been watching people work on it now for six or eight years. For 1972 a representation of the band it’s certainly one of the coolest. Whether it’s one of the coolest or not is irrelevant, it’s one of the only. Also, it happened to be a good show. Unfortunately, the movie’s only 70 or 90 minutes. It’s not the whole show. I’m saying unfortunately, but from 1972 it would be nice to see five minutes of material like that. I definitely think that people way higher up than me are working on that kind of arrangement. I hope so.
Hopefully, someday it’s released only because I know that some people would like to see it. And also, the Dead have the 16-track audio. That’s the thing I’ve always looked forward to. I think the video’s good. I like it. But, what I’ve always looked forward to is a surround sound mix of the “Dark Star” because we have the 16-track audio. That, to me, would be worth the price of admission, to hear a DTS or Dolby Digital surround sound mix of that.

JPG: Yes. That would be very nice.

DL: Honestly, I don’t know how further along it was since the last time you asked [back in 2005] only because I don’t hear anything. And it’s the kind of thing where should it ever go into an agreement level then I would probably just get the call saying, ‘Okay, we need to get the tapes up to a mixing person.’ That would be my involvement.

JPG: Is this the type of thing where with Rhino involved now and its team of lawyers they could make something like this become a reality?

DL: You are completely right. That’s exactly the kind of thing that they are very equipped to do…I don’t know much more than GDP, but definitely they are much equipped to do that kind of thing. They’re the kinds of people who can make something like that happen. The video is under 90 minutes but the show is almost three hours, I guess. So, what would be cool would be the whole movie and then the CD as a separate release. Not separate but maybe an included release – the three-CD release from the multi-track mix. That would be pretty cool.

Some more info on the film was included in my post:

SDH you should go to YouTube and do a search for "Grateful Dead Chateau d'Herouville" you will be happy to find some fine footage from 6-21-71! If you are able to, try to search out the full download of this video then sit back and enjoy some great 71 Dead European style.

Yeah, I eventually got that. Says it's unreleased. Someone needs to correct that ASAP (release the complete video, that is, could be cleaned up a bit)
